PERSPECTIVAS
“Perspectives” is an exploration that intertwines the visions of five artists: Stephan Balkenhol, Miquel Barceló, Susy Gómez, Fabian Marcaccio, and Bernardí Roig. In this gathering, each artist unfolds their unique perspective and technique, weaving deep reflections on the human figure, memory, and identity in contemporary art. The exhibition becomes a vibrant dialogue, where the human presence is redrawn in a perpetually changing world, capturing the essence of existence in a universe of constant transformations.
Stephan Balkenhol (Fritzlar, Germany, 1957) focuses on the human figure, influenced by abstract, minimalist, and conceptual art of the eighties. His sculpture “Woman and Relief (Yellow Game)”, 2007, of a naked woman holding a white towel, placed on a pedestal, is presented alongside a vibrant yellow wooden relief with red circles and navy blue lines, creating a striking visual contrast that highlights and universalizes the human figure.
Miquel Barceló (Felanitx, Spain, 1957) presents “Fétiche fragile aux allumetes”, 2000, a work in which a human-sized fetish figure stands before the viewer, accompanied by an ox skull in the background. This piece, created in Mali with sacrificial materials such as animal blood and baobab milk, underscores the intimate relationship between life and death, while the matches used on the canvas surface intensify the reflection on the transience and ephemeral nature of existence.
Susy Gómez (Pollença, Spain, 1964) invites us to explore the complexity of identity through an intimate and autobiographical lens. Her photographs, like the image of a naked woman bathed in softly blending pink tones “Sin título 68” ,1999-2000, capture the very essence of intimacy. Imbued with everyday metaphors, this work explores the human form and transcends towards the intersection of art and spirituality, inviting contemplation of social action and individual identity in the contemporary world.
Fabian Marcaccio (Rosario, Argentina, 1963) transports us to an abstract and vibrant world. His piece “Rapid-Demodernization”, 2006, depicts a robbery in progress: a car surrounded by three armed figures, while a blurred face with visible lips fades into the background. The explosion of colors and silicone relief textures enrich the scene, blending traditional techniques with industrial and digital processes. Marcaccio challenges the perception of time and space, transforming the image in a technological context and creating a new pictorial dimension that invites the viewer to a unique visual and sensory experience.
Bernardí Roig (Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 1965), showcases a white figure of a bent man, back turned, with his head resting against an image hanging on the wall. His sculpture “Ejercicios Sonámbulos,” 2024, devoid of color, creates a landscape of disheartened peace, playing with the duality of presence and absence, murmur and silence. Using white as an emblem of emptiness and enigma, Bernardí Roig invites deep introspection on identity and memory, enveloping the viewer in a silent and reflective dialogue.
Accompanying the work are two related pieces “Pintura – Temps (I, II)”. This set seeks to recover the emotional connection with painting, representing wounds from which an indistinct face emerges. This face, formed by layers of white paint, extends towards the edges of the canvas. The work shows painting as an excess of libido trapped in the density of its materiality.
